Originally released under the title 'La Fille Aux Yeux D'or', 'Gold' is the most economical way to grab 40 tracks by the French singer / actress Marie Laforet.
Although best known to ye-ye fans for her incendiary cover of 'Paint It Black' (Marie Douceur, Marie Ciolero) which, based on the evidence of the material found on this comp, is a freak entry in her catalogue, Marie Laforet was anything but a rocker. The bulk of her material from the sixties leans towards traditional folk, or material based around folk melodies from around the world, her cover of Simon & Garfunkel's 'The Sound of Silence' is exemplary. When she ventured into pop, with composers like Andre Popp, the arrangements were more sophisticated and French sounding than those of the ye-ye singers whose sound was informed by what was blowing in across the channel. Be warned there is a quotient of schmaltz here ('Cadeau', 'Choux Cailloux Genoux Epoux') that sounds as if it were sourced directly from the song-book of an eco-friendly kindergarten teacher. In the seventies she embraced dramatic balladry, 'Viens Viens' is a fine example of her vocal range.
